In Brooklyn geboren und aufgewachsen, begann Jamel Shabazz (*1960) in den sp\u00e4ten 1970er Jahren, Menschen zu fotografieren, denen er auf den Stra\u00dfen New Yorks begegnete. Seine Portr\u00e4ts entstehen seither weitgehend im \u00f6ffentlichen Raum und f\u00fcgen sich ein in die Tradition des Genres der Street Photography und des Menschen im \u00f6ffentlichen Raum. Die Stra\u00dfe als Raum der Begegnung und Selbstdarstellung, sei es durch Mode oder Pose, als B\u00fchne f\u00fcr Musik und auch kritische Momente des Lebens von Einzelpersonen, Gemeinschaften aus unterschiedlichen Generationen, sind die Themen, die Shabazz aufgreift.<\/p>\n

Seit vielen Jahren dokumentiert Jamel Shabazz mit seinen unmittelbar kommunizierenden und gleichzeitig sensiblen Portr\u00e4ts die Menschen der Black und Latin Communities und ihre Lebensmomente in New York. Seine Portr\u00e4ts zeigen dabei stets Empathie und N\u00e4he, stellen kompositorisch besondere Bildmomente im Stadtraum dar, der f\u00fcr viele der in seinen Portr\u00e4ts vorgestellten Personen zum Lebensraum der sozialen Interaktion und B\u00fchne zur Entwicklung der eigenen Identit\u00e4t wird. Das Werk von Shabazz kann in der Tradition der sozial engagierten Fotografie und in der Tradition von Gordon Parks stehenden Ans\u00e4tzen betrachtet werden. Die besondere Qualit\u00e4t der Fotografien von Jamel Shabazz schafft es, die positiven Lebensenergien und Lebensmomente von Minderheiten und oftmals durch ihre Hautfarbe sozial benachteiligten Personen trotz deren oftmals kritischer Lebensumst\u00e4nde zu erkennen.<\/p>\n

2018 wurde er mit dem Preis der Gordon Parks Foundation ausgezeichnet. 2022 folgte ein Publikationspreis der Gordon Parks Foundation f\u00fcr eine Publikation bei Steidl.<\/p>\n

Nach bereits wichtigen Museumsausstellungen in New York und Europa sowie einer Vielzahl von Publikationen im internationalen Kontext zeigt das Museum f\u00fcr Photographie Braunschweig in einer ersten Museumsausstellung in Deutschland das Werk des New Yorkers. Wichtige Werkgruppen, die im Bereich der Schwarzwei\u00df- und Farbfotografie seit den fr\u00fchen 1980er Jahren entstanden sind, fr\u00fche Fotoalben und B\u00fccher des in Brooklyn, New York lebenden Fotografen werden vorgestellt.<\/p>\n
