Transitions: Protest Cultures and Digital Worlds in Transition

Currently, many phenomena of transition are emerging in society: digital communication technologies are changing our working and private lives, and globally active protest movements are using digital tools for networking and high-profile campaigns. A more conscious approach to people and nature, strengthening democratic movements, and the pursuit of a more open society—as expressed in the recent protests in Belarus and the climate change movement—testify to a new civic engagement. Last but not least, the debates surrounding the phase-out of coal and the structural transformation in the affected regions, as well as the differing developments in urban and rural areas, reveal the fault lines that these changes entail.

What role can artistic photography play in these diverse processes of change? What kind of representation does it pursue? Does it actively participate and take a stand, or does it remain a detached observer? Does it incorporate the means of fast-paced digital communication or change itself into its artistic practice? Eight young artists reflect on current societal challenges and transformations in multimedia works.

A newspaper has been published to accompany the exhibition.
