Marcel van Eeden. The Secret Emperor

With Marcel van Eeden (born 1965), the Museum of Photography Braunschweig presents an internationally renowned and award-winning artist. His work comprises series of drawings that consistently oscillate between fact and fiction, constructing historical moments as suggestive visual narratives reminiscent of film noir. Reproduced image and text material created before the artist's birth in 1965 serves as the starting point. In addition to his series of drawings incorporating photographic and textual references, he has also been creating photographic works for several years using the gum bichromate printing process, a technique originating in the early days of photography. Photographed in the present day, the motifs of these painterly photographs, like the drawings, appear as artistic interpretations of historical moments. In both cases, Marcel van Eeden subverts an uncritical belief in historical factuality, employing the power of suggestion and imagination in combination with actual historical events.

The exhibition at the Museum of Photography Braunschweig represents the first collaboration with the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar. Both venues will present series of drawings and photographic works created specifically for the exhibition, featuring local references to Braunschweig and Goslar, among others.
