On July 10th, we will open the exhibition Jamel Shabazz. New York Moves and Black Communities , which was created in cooperation with the Kunsthaus Nürnberg and with the support of the Galerie Bene Taschen, Cologne.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Jamel Shabazz (born 1960) began photographing people he encountered on the streets of New York in the late 1970s. Since then, his portraits, which are both immediate and sensitive, have documented the lives of members of the Black and Latinx communities there. This is the first time the photographer's work has been presented in a museum setting in Germany.

Along with the opening, we're celebrating our annual public summer festival with a buffet, bar, and live music in the garden. Karle Bardowicks (saxophone) and Lars Bernsmann (guitar) will be improvising bossa nova and jazz standards.

The Message – HipHop & Jamel Shabazz' New York of the 1980s between social crisis and cultural resilience

The city of New York, where Jamel Shabazz was born in 1960, had already been the scene of many social and cultural movements: the Harlem Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement – ​​and from the 1970s onwards, also hip hop.

Lukas Helling's presentation addresses the socio-economic conditions of this urban space, the birthplace of hip hop. The cultural influence of music, fashion, and dance became visually apparent in the New York Cityscape and was significantly shaped by the Black communities. Shabazz roamed the streets of Brooklyn and the other boroughs with his camera, proudly capturing the people and creating a distinctive style of documentary street photography.
