Irmel Kamp. Architectural Images

In a comprehensive overview of her series of photographs created since 1978, the Museum of Photography Braunschweig presents the photographic work of Irmel Kamp (*1937, lives in Aachen and Switzerland) from June 25.6th to September 18.9th, 2022.

For several years, this body of work, focused on architectural themes, has been among the artistic discoveries of typologically oriented black-and-white photography, characterized by individual perspectives and cultural-historical as well as socio-atmospheric references. The exhibition at the Museum of Photography Braunschweig presents works from the series Zink (1978–1982), Tel Aviv (1987–92), Bruxelles-Brussel (1996/97), and Modernism in Europe (1998–2006). In addition to individual perspectives on buildings and their shaping by form and aesthetics, the changes brought about by humans and nature are always among the distinctive features of Irmel Kamp's photographs. The early, extensive Zink series and the Tel Aviv series, which was also accompanied by research, represent a particularly significant body of work . It was with this series that Irmel Kamp first gained recognition some two decades ago. Since then, her works have been shown occasionally in solo exhibitions at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen, at the IKOB in Eupen and in various group exhibitions, such as recently at the NRW Forum in Düsseldorf within the exhibition Made in Düsseldorf#4 – Architecture (February–March 2022) as well as some gallery exhibitions and are now part of important collections.

Following the Museum of Photography's presentation of several works by Irmel Kamp in connection with the Bauhaus centenary in 2019, the current solo exhibition offers an overview of her entire photographic oeuvre, which can be viewed within the context of typological and artistic concepts within a documentary-oriented black-and-white photography style. In some aspects, it recalls the work of Bernd and Hilla Becher, which focused on early industrial architecture, although Irmel Kamp's selection of subjects and buildings, as well as her artistic approach, allows for more individual and subjective considerations of architecture in urban and rural spaces. The high-quality black-and-white photographs are largely hand-printed on baryta or PE paper.

A publication (German/English) will be released to accompany the exhibition by the Walther and Franz König bookstore publishing house, featuring texts by:
Bettina Brosowsky, Tatjana Schneider, Andreas Prinzing and a conversation with Irmel Kamp and the curators Barbara Hofmann-Johnson (Director of the Museum of Photography Braunschweig) and Markus Mascher (Curator, Deputy Director of the Leopold-Hoesch-Museum, Düren).

Two editions from the ‘Zink’ series will be released to accompany the exhibition .
