Illusions of observation

The exhibition presents concepts in the photographic work of three international female artists from different generations that recall sociological, empirical or scientific themes, but transform them into their own illusionistic visual worlds.

The Italian artist Daniela Comani (born 1965 in Bologna) addresses aspects of gender roles in socio-culturally diverse areas of our society in many of her conceptually multi-part series of works, often in a humorous yet subtly critical manner. A prime example of this is her ongoing project "A Happy Marriage" (since 2003), in which the artist appears simultaneously as both a man and a woman in various everyday scenes.

The work of Hungarian artist Kata Geibl (born 1989 in Budapest) is being shown in an exhibition in Germany for the first time. In her multi-part series Sisyphus (2018), the artist, who currently lives in The Hague and Budapest, explores apparent experimental models of science in poetic and illusionistic images. The title is metaphorical and alludes to the discrepancy between trust in rational science and the ever-present riddles of existential connections.

Like stages for the study of nature, the scenarios with which Finnish photographic artist Sanna Kannisto (born 1974 in Hämeenlinna) creates visual worlds in her various series of works over the past few years appear, in which insects, plants, and birds, among other things, seem aesthetically transformed into their own timeless essence. For about two decades, the focus of Sanna Kannisto's photographic work has been on observing nature and its particular manifestations.

The Museum of Photography Braunschweig will release two special editions of Daniela Comani's photographs from the two series " Eine glückliche Ehe IA Happy Marriage" (2003-2020) and "Planet Earth:21st Century " (2015-19) to accompany the exhibition.
