Hartmut Neumann. Alien Planes. Photographic Works

Hartmut Neumann has been a professor at the Braunschweig University of Art since the early 1990s. His work encompasses painting, graphic arts, and photography. The exhibition at the Museum of Photography Braunschweig focuses on this aspect of the artist's oeuvre. Neumann will retire in 2022 and has also mentored many emerging artists – an occasion to present his photographic work with various series from recent years, including current pieces and a spatial installation.

In the selected dialogue, the exhibition not only shows works by Hartmut Neumann but also dialogical works with some of his former students such as Michael Bauer (*1973, lives in New York) and Tim Berresheim (*1975 lives in Aachen) and Sam Evans, who is still a student at the HBK.

Drawing on their respective artistic contexts, Michael Bauer and Hartmut Neumann created a photographic performance in 2004. The resulting photographic works are presented in the exhibition, along with new works by Tim Berresheim. In a complex and aesthetically free manner, the Aachen-based artist combines digital, computer-generated imagery with references to reality. For this exhibition, he engaged with works by Hartmut Neumann, creating a dialogue with his own visual worlds. Sam Evans is currently a student at the HBK (University of Fine Arts). Within the context of her photographic work, which often incorporates references to nature, she created portraits of Hartmut Neumann specifically for this exhibition.
