Memorative images relating to the history of the Museum of Photography Braunschweig and its exhibitions

To mark its 40th anniversary, the Museum of Photography Braunschweig looks back on its exhibition history in thematic terms through a selection of important photographic works and photographic positions.

Alongside the documentary-style images primarily exhibited in the 1980s and 1990s, various conceptual artistic approaches developed over the following decades, focusing on staging, media-inherent references, or installations. The exhibition will also explore the possibilities of photographic imagery, using Boris Eldagsen's AI-based generative photography as an example.

The two neoclassical museum gatehouses are integrated into the presentation, and the rooms are designed with references to the history of the house.

A medium in transition: from photographic image to installation, memory images

Themes such as landscape, human, portrait, nature, animal, working environments and conceptual projects on the application areas and design characteristics and conditions of the medium of photography were among the important aspects of the museum's programming work over the last 40 years.

Experimental photography, Polaroid, pinhole camera photography, black and white photography, color photography, and digital manipulation were presented, as was the use of footage or found and selected images in new contexts within the exhibitions. Film works also expanded the exhibitions, which were shown not only in the two gatehouses but also at other venues.

Furthermore, presentation in installations represents an important aspect of the medium's development.

Parallel to the exhibition, a film program takes place in the museum garden every two weeks in cooperation with the Lichtparcours 2024 and on the occasion of the 40th anniversary.
