In 1984, at a time when photography was only marginally recognized as an independent artistic medium in the public consciousness, and its significance was primarily viewed in applied, scientific, or journalistic contexts, a group of 13 dedicated individuals founded the Museum of Photography Braunschweig. They aimed to highlight the importance of photography and the diversity of its creative and conceptual possibilities within the context of the fine arts and its history, as well as with regard to the city of Braunschweig and its once-important photographic industry, including companies like Voigtländer and Rollei.
The Museum of Photography Braunschweig is one of the most important museums dedicated to the medium and is supported by the museum association and the city of Braunschweig. The supporting association now has approximately 175 members.

Member exhibitions have always been an important part of the participatory opportunities for members in the museum's exhibition history – a tradition that, with different content concepts, culminates at the end of each
The exhibition year has been maintained to this day.
The contributions to this year's anniversary exhibition by members present diverse and openly metaphorical interpretations of the theme " Development | 40 | Development" through photographic and filmic works. Some participants interpret the number 40 with different cultural references, while others explore the passage of time and traces of transience as they become visible in urban contexts. Further connections are made to people born in 1984, and objects from that period are also included in the exhibition.
In addition, annual gifts/editions by Dörte Eißfeldt and Christian Retschlag as well as Käthe Buchler can be seen.
A publication accompanies the anniversary exhibition, the realization of which was made possible by the commitment of the working group for the exhibition and the support of members of the Museum für Photographie Braunschweig eV, the Ministry of Science and Culture of the State of Lower Saxony and the Bürgerstiftung.
