Documentary Photography Grants 12 of the Wüstenrot Foundation

The Museum of Photography Braunschweig and the Wüstenrot Foundation are presenting new works by young artists, created as part of the Documentary Photography Grants 12, until June 7, 2020. The exhibition brings together diverse projects in which the photographers explored the political and social conditions of our world. Methodologically, formally, and technically, they investigate the boundaries of photo-documentary reality that are opening up in the context of social and photographic changes.

Thematically, the works revolve around contemporary socio-political issues: Christian Kasners (born 1983) explores the historical legacies and political expectations of Czech citizens in Nová Evropa and their impact on the idea of ​​a united Europe. With Jiwon Kim (born 1982), we embark on a search for paradise in Costa Rica. Jens Klein's (born 1970) work, Arbeit Sunset, presents a labyrinthine visual essay depicting supposed escape routes from East Germany. Joscha Steffens (born 1982) explores the phenomenon of young people who, through shared play, have discovered a (quasi-)religious experience of a faith community in his project Nexus.

The Wüstenrot Foundation's Documentary Photography Grant is the most prestigious award of its kind in Germany. It is aimed at photographers who explore themes from everyday life and continually redefine the representational function of photography using contemporary methods.

The Museum of Photography Braunschweig continues its long-standing collaboration with the Wüstenrot Foundation through the exhibition of documentary photography, grants, and events exploring photographic themes. Last year, in addition to presenting the exhibitions, the museum and foundation jointly organized the symposium "Inspiration Bauhaus" in Braunschweig.
