In an overview and selection of important works and series created in the past 13 years, the Museum für Photographie Braunschweig will present photographic works, objects and film works by Andrzej Steinbach from September 27, 2025, and will comprehensively present for the first time in Germany his most recent series of works , Extensions (since 2024), created in 2024.

With this current series, Andrzej Steinbach continues his precisely minimalist photographic staging practice, staging mostly neutral-looking “figures” as typified, gender-neutral representatives in equally neutralized spatial environments and with clothing from the contexts of the working world or neutral streetwear.

Through gestural and posing interplay with objects from the world of work, the person appearing in the group of works represents aspects and shifts in context of economic, cultural and social as well as gender-specific attributions from the field of technically shaped working life and simultaneously establishes references to the genre of portraiture.

The media-reflexive series *The Apparatus* (2019) served as an exemplary case study for the works presented in the exhibition . The recurring figure in the photographs appears with various cameras. The gestures and poses used in these photographs serve as references to diverse design-related as well as socio-political contexts. Several works from this series will be on display.

Alongside the series of images that explore the relationship between humans and objects, thereby always addressing cultural-historical, sociological, and societal aspects, while simultaneously dissolving familiar aspects of content attribution into ambiguities, technical objects and tools also appear as a focus of contextual shifts in Andrzej Steinbach's work groups, as seen in the color and black-and-white series Auto Erotik (2022) and Disassembling a Typewriter (2022). In both cases, the titles, and thus the linguistic level of the works and series, become important design elements in his art.

Biography
Born in Czarnków, Poland in 1983, Andrzej Steinbach grew up in Karl-Marx-Stadt – renamed Chemnitz after 1989 – studied at the HGB Leipzig, and now lives and works in Berlin. He has already received important prizes and scholarships, and with his cross-media works and installations, he is considered one of a younger generation of artists in Germany who have also had significant international exhibitions.

His 35-part series " Society Begins with Three " (2017) was exhibited, in a selection, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 2018. The series was shown several years ago at the Museum of Photography Braunschweig as part of the Wüstenrot Foundation's important Documentary Photography Grant 11 projects, and the Sprengel Museum Hannover has also presented some of Andrzej Steinbach's work in the region.

With the exhibition now conceived, the Museum of Photography Braunschweig aims to present a first overview of the facets of Andrzej Steinbach's artistic development through a selection of important works.

Cooperation
The exhibition is a collaboration with the Kunsthalle Erfurt (winter 2025/26) and the Huis Marseille, Museum for Photography Amsterdam (autumn/winter 2026/27). At all exhibition venues, the multifaceted nature of Andrzej Steinbach's work will be revealed through diverse spatial presentations.

A publication by Spector Books accompanies the exhibition, featuring texts by Barbara Hofmann-Johnson, Susanne Knorr and Jan Wenzel.
