Alwin Lay. Prego

Looking back on works from previous years and with works created specifically for the exhibition, the Museum of Photography will present the first solo museum exhibition of Alwin Lay (*1984 in Lukosch/Romania, lives in Cologne) in spring 2021.

In his seemingly minimalist stagings of objects, which become the starting point for his photographic and filmic works and appear spatially translated in sculptural to installation-like arrangements, Lay takes our perceptual habits to absurd extremes, questioning causalities and proportional relationships of objects in space.

Using illusionistic means, he encourages a re-evaluation of things and their relationships, and disrupts our expectations of a photographic image.

To kick off the exhibition-related program "7 days – 7 perspectives," the Museum of Photography Braunschweig is offering a guided tour of the current exhibition, "Alwin Lay. Prego," with simultaneous sign language interpretation. The event is open to both deaf and hearing people.

The guided tour begins with an introduction to key Rollei camera models and aspects of the company's history, drawn from the collection of the Braunschweig Municipal Museum. The second part of the tour, held at the Braunschweig Museum of Photography, focuses on the artistic works of Alwin Lay on this theme. The exhibition features legendary camera models such as the twin-lens Rolleiflex, as well as the plastic camera 'Prego', which also lends its name to the exhibition, and explores further connections to Rollei's history. What inspiration did the 'Rolleiflex' and 'Prego' models exert on the artist?

For the final weekend of the exhibition, a special artist-led tour will take place with Alwin Lay, Barbara Hofmann-Johnson, museum director, and Axel Grüner, camera collector and member of the museum association's board. While Alwin Lay and Barbara Hofmann-Johnson will focus on the artistic aspects of the exhibition, Axel Grüner will provide insights into the unique features of the twin-lens Rolleiflex camera, which laid the foundation for Rollei's fame in Braunschweig and is one of the "protagonists" of Alwin Lay's photographic motifs on display at the Museum of Photography Braunschweig.
