Käthe Buchler in England
From 1914 onward, increasing numbers of women were called upon to serve on the home front in traditionally male-dominated professions. Käthe Buchler saw her primary task as documenting her female colleagues at work through photography. Her pictures also depict her family, wounded soldiers returning from the front, and the nursing staff caring for them. The photographs were presented alongside supplementary material exploring the university's role as a military hospital from 1914 to 1918. This suggests that the First World War left a similar impact on both sides – English and German.
“Beyond the Battlefields” is a traveling exhibition jointly organized by the Museum für Photographie Braunschweig, the University of Hertfordshire Galleries and the AHCR-funded First World War Engagement Centres at the University of Birmingham and the University of Hertfordshire.
