Gregor Zivic has been working with the medium of photography since 1997. From his beginnings as a painter he turned to photography and its particular features as a result of the problem of photographically reproducing his paintings. At the interface between painterly and photographic discourse, Zivic has developed a heterogeneous transmedia process by way of meticulous pictorial arrangements. In the course of weeklong preparatory work, he conceives pictorial scenes in which the artist ad persona (both real and as a doll) and his oil paintings form a constant module.
The banal scenarios, often alluding to memories of his childhood, play not only with the perspective of photography, but with the moment of movement and with pictorial simulation. Spaces specially constructed for the takes address the theme of the media and the visual constituents of space, time and perception, whereby Zivic uses photography in the classical, documentary sense, without any digital or other interventions into the image. Nevertheless, he is still concerned with reflecting on the conditions of the photographic image in the face of virtual reality.
