  "Grass-Plot Shoot"

"Grass-plot shoot" Purmerend is the third of three similar works Saskia Janssen has created with George Korsmit. Their "actors" were members of the "bridge class" at the regional secondary school, where newcomers learn basic Dutch. The piece was commissioned by the Museum Waterland in Purmerend, an Amsterdam suburban community . For P' rend, an event dealing with the identity (or lack of it) of towns like Purmerend, Janssen and Korsmit developed an installation consisting of two projections -slides and video- and sound.

The images show a group of youths, varying numbers of whom seem to literally "hang out" some meters above the ground, suspended on a fence. The young people fool around, smoke a cigarette. Sometimes they are seriously posing; other times boredom takes over. It is a bizarre theater of reality. Saskia Janssen's and George Korsmit's work is representative of the refreshing mentality of a younger generation of image makers who have experienced postmodern society rather than having formulated its starting points.
