For the past 13 years, Hrafnkell Sigurdsson has resided abroad, or in "Utlönd", as we say in Icelandic, and only been to Iceland as a visitor. Translated as "outlands", the Icelandic word "Utlönd" carries a weight of meaning, signifying the rest of the known world and implying that when in Iceland you are at the very center of the universe. This situation has made it possible for Sigurdsson to develop a very personal relationship to a phenomenon that has assumed mythical proportions in the minds of the natives of the tiny island: Icelandic Nature.
His recent photographs of tents in landscapes can be read at different levels: the tent is a man-made private mountain, or a delicate shell of nylon framing a small portion of the unembraceable, a contemporary shelter from the forces of nature, or a place where man puts himself into the most vulnerable situation possible: sleep.
